Azim N. Khamisa - President and Chairman of Sovereign Capital Markets, Inc. - has over 30 + years of highly successful experience in investment banking (domestic and international) both in the corporate and real estate sectors of the world economy. Sovereign Capital Markets has associates and correspondent relationships in most major capitals of the world. The company also provides financial advisory, corporate development and consulting services in the capital formation needs of selected corporate clients. Mr. Khamisa has served and continues to serve on the Board of Directors of a number of client companies.
With wide experience in the finance industry and his expertise is international in scope, he has conducted successful ventures in Europe, Asia, Africa, Canada and the United States. He has been recognized in several publications including the 26th Edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, the 10th Edition of Who's Who in the World and the 3rd Edition of Who's Who in Emerging Leaders of America.
Over the tenure of his career, Mr. Khamisa has achieved an impressive record of over 90 successfully completed transactions. His experience includes arranging both debt and equity capital, arranging project financing, structuring international financial transactions, conducting mergers and acquisitions activities, structuring international financial trasactions, donductingm mergers and acquisitions, structuring joint ventures, arranging venture capital, organizing credit enhancements, dealing in bond financing, securing letters of credit, credit lines, mezzanine debt and other forms of financing and investments.
He is multi-lingual naturalized U.S. Citizen residing in the United States since 1974. During his career, he has developed a broad expertise in negotiations, corporate finance, international finance, project financing, joint ventures, venture capital, corporate development and the appropriate skills in the structuring of several diverse and complex transactions.
Mr. Khamisa was educated in Kenya (grade school) and in the United Kingdom (1965-1971). He holds a degree in mathematics and an intermediate professional qualification in accounting. His academic honors include the top score amount 18,000 students taking Section 1 of the Association of Certified and Corporate Accountants Examination (the British equivalent of the CPA Institute). He has served as a special coordinator for the Aga Khan Foundation (an international development aid agency) and served on the Board of School Futures (a non-profit engaged in development and operation of Charter Schools nationally from K-12 grades). He serves on the Board of TakeAction ReAct Awards (a teen recognition national program developed by ReAct Magazine, a subsidiary of Parade Magazine). He also serves on the Advisory Board of The Center for Safe Urban School Communities at the University of Louisville. He is the Founder and President of The Tariq Khamisa Foundation (www.tkf.org) dedicated to the elimination of youth violence in our communities. TKF is in its 15th year. Mr. Khamisa is also the founder of the CANEI (Constant and Never Ending Improvement program) which targets offending youth and restores them as functioning and contributing members of society. CANEI (www.nyap.org) is in its ninth year and active in nine US citities. Mr. Khamis is also active in various other philanthropic, non-profit charitable organizations. He has received over 60 awards regional, national and international for his philanthropic work including the highest Special Community Service Award from President Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno. His work has been reported in several medial publications including the New York Times, Washington Post, Parade Magazine, People Magazine and U.S.A. Today. He has appeared in several regional and national radio and television programs including NBC's "Today Show" and KPBS's "Fresh Air:, CBS and NBC. Mr Khamisa often delivers keynote addresses at a variety of venues domestically and internationally, including in June 1996 the Stand for Children Rally held at the Lincoln Memorial, which attracted 300,000 delegates. He is an international motivational speaker with over 400 keynote addresses. Mr. Khamisa has met with President Clinton, Attorney General Janet Reno, Secretary of Education Richard Riley and Vice President Al Gore at the White House to develop policy to curb the increasing rise in youth violence. Mr. Khamisa is also the author of the award-winning book "From Murder to Forgiveness." He has written a sequel "From Forgiveness to Fulfillment" and in 2009 Random House published his third book "The Secrets of the Bulletproof Spirit." His fourth book and the last on in the trilogy, From Fulfillment to Peace," is scheduled to be release in 2011.
Mr. Khamisa employs a consistent, conservative business philosophy with a heavy emphasis on planning. He is dedicated to the establishment of innovative, detail-oriented, "hands-on" management team that is committed to the betterment of the environment and humanity.
